    Variability of the Vela Pulsar-wind Nebula Observed with Chandra

    The observations of the pulsar-wind nebula (PWN) around the Vela pulsar with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, taken on 2000 April 30 and November 30, reveal its complex morphology reminiscent of that of the Crab PWN. Comparison of the two observations shows changes up to 30% in the surface brightness of the PWN features. Some of the PWN elements show appreciable shifts, up to a few arcseconds (about 10^{16} cm), and/or spectral changes.     Holonomy groups and W-symmetries

    Irreducible sigma models, i.e. those for which the partition function does not factorise, are defined on Riemannian spaces with irreducible holonomy groups. These special geometries are characterised by the existence of covariantly constant forms which in turn give rise to symmetries of the supersymmetric sigma model actions. The Poisson bracket algebra of the corresponding currents is a W-algebra. Extended supersymmetries arise as special cases.Comment: pages 2

    Role of Topoisomerase IIβ in DNA Damage Response following IR and Etoposide

    The role of topoisomerase IIβ was investigated in cell lines exposed to two DNA damaging agents, ionising radiation (IR) or etoposide, a drug which acts on topoisomerase II. The appearance and resolution of γH2AX foci in murine embryonic fibroblast cell lines, wild type and null for DNA topoisomerase IIβ, was measured after exposure to ionising radiation (IR) or etoposide. Topoisomerase II-DNA adduct levels were also measured. IR rapidly triggered phosphorylation of histone H2AX, less phosphorylation was seen in TOP2β−/− cells, but the difference was not statistically significant. IR did not produce topoisomerase II-DNA adducts above control levels. Etoposide triggered the formation of topoisomerase II-DNA adducts and the phosphorylation of histone H2AX, the γH2AX foci appeared more slowly with etoposide than with IR. Topoisomerase II-DNA complexes in WT cells but not TOP2β−/− cells increased significantly at 24 hours with the proteasome inhibitor MG132, suggesting topoisomerase IIβ adducts are removed by the proteasome

    Conformally invariant bending energy for hypersurfaces

    The most general conformally invariant bending energy of a closed four-dimensional surface, polynomial in the extrinsic curvature and its derivatives, is constructed. This invariance manifests itself as a set of constraints on the corresponding stress tensor. If the topology is fixed, there are three independent polynomial invariants: two of these are the straighforward quartic analogues of the quadratic Willmore energy for a two-dimensional surface; one is intrinsic (the Weyl invariant), the other extrinsic; the third invariant involves a sum of a quadratic in gradients of the extrinsic curvature -- which is not itself invariant -- and a quartic in the curvature. The four-dimensional energy quadratic in extrinsic curvature plays a central role in this construction.Comment: 16 page

    X-ray time variability across the atoll source states of 4U 1636--53

    We have studied the rapid X-ray time variability in 149 pointed observations with the \textit{Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} (RXTE)'s Proportional Counter Array of the atoll source 4U~1636--53 in the banana state and, for the first time with RXTE, in the island state. We compare the frequencies of the variability components of 4U~1636--53 with those in other atoll and Z-sources and find that 4U~1636--53 follows the universal scheme of correlations previously found for other atoll sources at (sometimes much) lower luminosities. Our results on the hectohertz QPO suggest that the mechanism that sets its frequency differs from that for the other components, while the amplitude setting mechanism is common. A previously proposed interpretation of the narrow low-frequency QPO frequencies in different sources in terms of harmonic mode switching is not supported by our data, nor by some previous data on other sources and the frequency range that this QPO covers is found not to be related to spin, angular momentum or luminosity.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Surfaces immersed in Lie algebras associated with elliptic integrals

    The main aim of this paper is to study soliton surfaces immersed in Lie algebras associated with ordinary differential equations (ODE's) for elliptic functions. That is, given a linear spectral problem for such an ODE in matrix Lax representation, we search for the most general solution of the wave function which satisfies the linear spectral problem. These solutions allow for the explicit construction of soliton surfaces by the Fokas-Gel'fand formula for immersion, as formulated in (Grundland and Post 2011) which is based on the formalism of generalized vector fields and their prolongation structures. The problem has been reduced to examining three types of symmetries, namely, a conformal symmetry in the spectral parameter (known as the Sym-Tafel formula), gauge transformations of the wave function and generalized symmetries of the associated integrable ODE. The paper contains a detailed explanation of the immersion theory of surfaces in Lie algebras in connection with ODE's as well as an exposition of the main tools used to study their geometric characteristics. Several examples of the Jacobian and P-Weierstrass elliptic functions are included as illustrations of the theoretical results.Comment: 22 pages, 3 sets of figures.     Quantum deformations of associative algebras and integrable systems

    Quantum deformations of the structure constants for a class of associative noncommutative algebras are studied. It is shown that these deformations are governed by the quantum central systems which has a geometrical meaning of vanishing Riemann curvature tensor for Christoffel symbols identified with the structure constants. A subclass of isoassociative quantum deformations is described by the oriented associativity equation and, in particular, by the WDVV equation. It is demonstrated that a wider class of weakly (non)associative quantum deformations is connected with the integrable soliton equations too. In particular, such deformations for the three-dimensional and infinite-dimensional algebras are described by the Boussinesq equation and KP hierarchy, respectively.Comment: Numeration of the formulas is correcte

    The Conformal Willmore Functional: a Perturbative Approach

    The conformal Willmore functional (which is conformal invariant in general Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g)) is studied with a perturbative method: the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. Existence of critical points is shown in ambient manifolds (R3,gϵ)(\mathbb{R}^3, g_\epsilon) -where gϵg_\epsilon is a metric close and asymptotic to the euclidean one.     On Density of State of Quantized Willmore Surface-A Way to Quantized Extrinsic String in R^3

    Recently I quantized an elastica with Bernoulli-Euler functional in two-dimensional space using the modified KdV hierarchy. In this article, I will quantize a Willmore surface, or equivalently a surface with the Polyakov extrinsic curvature action, using the modified Novikov-Veselov (MNV) equation. In other words, I show that the density of state of the partition function for the quantized Willmore surface is expressed by volume of a subspace of the moduli of the MNV equation.Comment: AMS-Tex Us
